Photography Terminology

Types of Camera

Point and shoot – Fixed lens, normally compact size, can be film, instant picture or digital. Mobile phones could come under this category.

Bridge – These fit between the category above and SLR. They tend to have a large zoom range with a fixed lens.

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) – Film camera bodies with interchangeable lens. Have a mirror which allows you to view through the Lens and flips up out of the way when you take a picture. Digital cameras have taken over from film, but it is making a come back and new film cameras are coming on the market.

DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) – Digital camera body, the same as an SLR except it uses a digital camera image sensor to record the image.

Mirrorless – This is the way SLR cameras are heading, they use an electronic display which takes the image straight from the sensor. There is no mirror in a “mirrorless camera so the can be made smaller and have much more flexibility with lens design.

Large and Medium format – Specialised cameras, generally used for specific professional use.
